Climb beyond your Job description
I am lucky to get a chance to set up things in a Universal Bank where I didn’t have any room to review what is strictly coming under my defined job role and what is not, in the initial years !
In this century, only two banks in India have so far received the universal banking licence (very recently one more received). Getting to be part of one — and that too in my mid-thirties — was nothing short of divine blessings. I came from the largest commercial bank in the country, but this was a different ball game altogether.
No policy. No structured set up. A clean slate. Limited manpower all across. The only rule — “Get it done.”
That phase taught me the meaning of “building from scratch” .. which essentially means, you may have to do anything and everything !
When the organisation is young, you cannot say, “This is not my work.” You do what is needed because something bigger is being built.
And what you gain in return is priceless — hands-on multifaceted exposure that shapes who you become. It gave me the confidence to handle uncertainty, manage chaos, and turn ideas into action.
Years later, as I’m again setting up something from scratch — this time for myself — I find those lessons resurfacing every day. Yes, I’ll build a team soon (you can’t do everything by your own forever), but the foundation, the idea, the drive — they have to be yours.
So, in all my classroom sessions today, I share this message to young professionals stepping into BFSI or any sector per se—
👉 Don’t restrict yourself to your job description in your initial years.
👉 Don’t wait for “your turn.”
👉 Learn everything you can, whenever you can.
Because the knowledge you pick up today — even outside your defined domain — will “someday” shape the leader in you.
